U.S. Secretary of Transportation Has Metrorail North Corridor On His Mind

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg has Metrorail ‘s North Corridor expansion on his mind, according to the Herald.

Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava spoke to Buttigieg about the project, the report said.

“If I didn’t already have the North Corridor on my mind when I got here, the mayor made sure that I’m going to have it on my mind as I leave,” Buttigieg said.

County officials are hoping to get around half the cost to build the $2 billion project from the federal government. An application is pending.

Since the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law was passed, Miami-Dade County has received over $400 million in federal funds.

Overall, Levine Cava’s administration says it has been able to secure over $1.3 billion in federal and state grant funding combined.

I really like U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg 👍🏼

As the progressives are getting crazier by the day, many moderate Democrats like myself are rooting for Pete to be the next presidential candidate in 2028! He’s a very unifying figure and as smart as they come.

Unifying, as in spending money on rebuilding wayciss bridges rather than expanding your beloved Metromover?

I’m old enough enough to remember how the USA had a baby formula shortage, and a massive transportation disaster at the Seaports.
Buttigieg had no ideas and was no where to be found.

Mr Sunshine

And if you’d only been born a couple weeks earlier I suppose you would have learned that the baby formula disaster was caused by a single manufacturer cutting corners and not keeping a clean facility leading to the death of babies.

If you’d been born just a little before that you would have discovered that there was a world wide pandemic that killed millions and caused global supply chain disruptions.

Pete worked tirelessly to ease the bottlenecks and to get emergency shipments of formula. Ah to be so young to have such a limited memory.

We saw during the early days of the pandemic that the supply chain disruptions can put Americans’ lives and livelihoods at risk.

My Administration is building a resilient supply chain that’s made in America.

He didn’t seem to be so smart or supportive during one of the worst train disasters in our nation. But that’s under the rug now so people like you don’t remember, or may not even know about it.

Nice to see him resurface after hiding from that Supply Chain debacle at the Long Beach Seaport and all the train derailment.

What’s not to like about a charming guy who takes money from some people and then uses that money to buy friends?

Metromover isnt that bad as it is. Just needs to add more cars so you have people moving faster. Miami Beach sucks and doesnt want an extension into the beach so the best thing is up north miami ave. However, the north metro rail extension would be huge for the county and City of Miami. This would allow more transportation opportunity for the norther part of the county and bring some economic growth in the areas of the station.

Anonymous

The stations don’t have room for more beer cans, nor does the system have the power for pulling longer trains. It will need to be completely rebuilt to the point it would be more cost effective to replace it with grade-separated streetcars, which would also remove all the unsightly flyovers and making it a lot more flexible for expansion.

Bruno

Flexible for expansion?!

Metromover is 100% subsidized.

Bruno

And it has to be to exist.

If riders were asked to pay the costs of their rides, only a VERY few would do it.

Just a guess, but if a Metromover ticket cost $5, ridership would probably be less than half.

Anonymous

Time to ask Metromover riders to pay their share then, just like drivers pay for highways with gas taxes and tolls.

Mr Sunshine

So is the palmetto. Your point?

Anonymous

Transport infrastructure is one of the few government “investments” that qualify as true investments. The increase in commercial activity and efficiency of labor deployment brought about by road, rail, bus, and even trolley deployments may seem obscure, but we don’t spend much time thinking about our lymphatic systems either until something is awry. South Florida needs these projects, just done in a way with as little graft as possible.

Bruno

Mostly agree.

Airports, Seaports, highways, bridges, tunnels, and freight train transportation are definitely needs not wants. Most of those “investments” can sustain themselves and provide a return on investment in tangible ways. For instance, the $1b tunnel at PortMiami is paid for by tolls, MIA gets paid for by Landing Fees and taxes on cargo, and Turnpikes collect tolls.

However, not all transportation projects are created equal, much less managed equally.
The 1/2 Penny transportation tax in Miami-Dade was marred by corruption.
The 1984 Metrorail map was developed with so much political input that it still carries the burden of bloat and inefficiency 4 decades later.

Need this to the stadium ASAP. Ross has transformed it into an awesome venue with 2 football teams, F1, tennis, and concerts happening throughout the year. The lack of mass transit is the missing piece. Traffic out of games is always the absolute worst

Huh

Ross hasn’t done anything, he simply has space. The football fans leave at half. The football team he doesn’t own can’t wait to leave. Also a metro mover to Opa Locka for one day a week?

Bruno

Ross put his money where his mouth is, lead people to achieve a multi-million dollar refurbishment. He courted te Miami Open to leave the decades l9ng home 9n Key Biscayne, etc etc etc.

Are you really confused?

West Expansion and South Expansion is far more needed along with a metromvoer expansion up north Miami and rail connecting the Beach.

anonymous

I agree with you on west expansion but there are much more people in the northern part of the county

Anonymous

MetroRAIL eastern expansion, to Miami Beach then. Residents will actually use it regularly, rather than for football games. The NIMBYs are a vocal, very small minority in one neighborhood.

Hello

Why would that cost $2 billion??? Wtf

ANON

Glad for any expansion of the system but they want to expand the rail into low density suburb rather than extending it where it’s needed, through the much higher density coast. We need metrorail to Edgewater, Midtown, Aventura, where the necessity to drive coupled with the density have led to insane levels of traffic.

Kurt

Where along Biacayne Blvd can you extend Metrorail?

Taxed Out

This is pointless. Why build a $2B 10-mile commuter line with periodic weekend use for sports events and concerts? This route deserves regional rail not Metrorail.

A better use of Metrorail assets would be to increase density in the City of Miami. They should run a line near 8th Street / Flagler until 37th Avenue. The line should run east from Downtown to Miami Beach. They should run another line along 37th Ave linking Airport to the Grove. Increase density in the core and provide people options that don’t involve getting in a car or transferring to a trolley.

Annon

Actually some of the heaviest commuters come from the north end of the county. Also this provides park and ride options for broward. They should have expanded this decades like decades ago.

B-but muh football and transit “equity!” Stop making sense!

Bruno

For much less than $2B
The Boring Company should put a tunnel from the Dolphin Mall due east under the Miami International Airport with a stop, one at Civic Center/Marlins Stadium, one at Brightline, one at PortMiami cruise ship terminal, and one at Miami Beach Convention Center.

Most be easier to aquire right of ways underground than the alternative.

Hello

Extending Metrorail to Homestead is as unfeasible as extending it to Miami Gardens. It should be extended east and west, to dense areas that are walkable enough so residents will use it.

Anonymous

Wrong—lots of new high density development along US1 down towards Homestead and up through Broward is being built. Going west and over to the beach would, what, connect FIU students to South Beach? Who cares.

I’m shocked at how anyone thinks Buttigieg is qualified or even been good in this office……do you guys watch the news? East Palestine destruction, literally dozens of ships off the coast of Long Beach that couldn’t come into port during COVID while people couldn’t buy toilet paper, while Buttigieg was on paternity leave…….This has nothing to do with his sexuality, this has everything to do with him being awful at his job. The level of cognitive dissonance and blindness because of your political persuasion to justify his job performance is mind boggling. Just look at his record, he’s been awful. Awful.

The north extension makes no sense to me. Should be closer to the coast.

Also it should be underground since the flyovers are massive for the metrorail

Makes you wonder why Metrosegguals want it extended to Wynwood while simultaneously complaining that the streetscape is bad.

Underground metrorail lines are not conceivable due to Florida’s geography, but also because of weather events. An underground subway would trap water in the case of mass flooding.
