Ultra In Negotiations To Move To Virginia Key After Downtown Miami Residents Block Use Of Bayfront Park

A handful of downtown Miami residents appear to have successfully blocked Ultra Music Festival from returning to Bayfront Park.

Instead, festival organizers are now in negotiation to move to Virginia Key, according to the Herald.

Commissioners voted unanimously last month to reject a new contract for use of Bayfront Park. Among those voting against the deal was Bayfront Trust head Joe Carollo, who had been negotiating that the rent to be paid by Ultra would double.

Ultra has been held in downtown Miami for 18 years.

A preliminary hearing on the use of Virginia Key is scheduled by city commissioners on November 15.

As part of the deal, Ultra could help build an African-American museum in Virginia Key Beach Park in order to win support from commissioner Keon Hardemon.

If ULTRA thought the Nimbys in Downtown Miami were a pain wait until they meet the Nimbys from Key Biscayne!!!

I grew up on KB and saw how these guys function. They have $30MM in reserve just to waste on lawsuits. They fought and lost the Boat Show lawsuit, get ready because they are Lawyering up as we speak for this showdown…

If you want to say something about it, them move to KB, otherwise shut your piehole!

It was a world class venue with the wall of City Lights in the background.. Now will be in the mosquito/sand flea infested woods on a deserted beach next to sewer plant.. Good call guys!

And next to the metrorail and highways and the music is so loud no one would be able to hear the airplanes.

Ugh

Uh that stadium will now be a decade away. They have to hash out a lot of airport permitting, engineering, and actual architectural design among many other things eg street infrastructure, parking, transit.

Gene

We don’t need the tourism. This is a residential neighborhood with taxpayers. Do you pay taxes?

Anonymous

We generate a lot in food and beverage and lodging taxes, Gene. This is NOT a residential neighborhood. This is a DOWNTOWN (specifically, the Central Business District). Downtowns are VIBRANT. Removing Ultra because of NIMBY would be like NYCEDC relocating the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade or NYE Ball Drop because SOME of the residents couldn’t have their peace and quiet for THREE days and made more noise than the younger residents be who actually work full time jobs and don’t have time to attend meetings. Only 14% of Downtown residents live in owner-occupied housing, meaning a VERY small minority of you are pretending that your taxes are worth more than sales taxes, lodging taxes, and property taxes for commercial buildings (yes, they pay taxes too! In fact, 49% of all of downtown’s assessed values (property taxing values) are generated from commercial property owners, but please tell me how nearly half of the tax roll shouldn’t have a voice). In addition to property taxes, $128M in tourism-related taxes were generated in Miami-Dade County in 2017, and exactly how much do you pay in taxes?

So this is Miami right? The city to visit for fast cars, women an a party. You let the few residents that actually live downtown run Ultra of 18 years out of downtown! They pay the city millions an millions for the local businesses, you let it go for a few spoiled rich assholes! If this not the dumbest thing I have heard this year! It’s only a what 3 day event in Exchange for millions to the city an businesses. All for some rich residents that don’t contribute nothing to the city! ULTRA MOVE TO WYNWOOD! It’s a better fit in my opinion…

Gene

You must live in Wynwood. I’d love Ultra to move next to you. Send them an email, why don’t you?

Let me guess Eugene, you’re a senior citizen? You should have retired to Kendall instead of Downtown Miami. Or at a minimum, to those old people towers south of Brickell.

You just give the same old tired phrase – “You’re not welcome here, move…….
Nope. My bucks are just as good as yours. Downtown will not survive as an amusement park. People like you as soon as they turn 21 and get kicked out of your parents basement will go to Kendall.
It’s all about creating a decent place to live for everybody. I’m not against the Ultra concert – just where it is and how it affects a large group of people – negatively.
Marlins Stadium would be perfect.

Ultra destroyed Bayfront Park for 4-5 months every year. Plus, the 110 decibel noise was causing health problems for residents and tourists.

Anonymous

how is that any different from any other event held there ( I live there by the way )

Anonymous

This is a gross overstatement. As someone who works overlooking Bayfront, the park is closed for a month at most. If you think this is destructive, check out Grovetober Fest. Always kills the grass and harms that park much longer than Ultra does to Bayfront. Idk how any of you love Bayfront so much as a park….not enough shade trees, benches, trash cans, etc. because believe or not, it’s a venue, not a neighborhood park.

Transit friendly, walkable venue to car dependent venue. Sure looks like a winner for all involved.

What are you smoking? The only transit friendly area in South Florida is downtown Miami. This will be a huge traffic nightmare as now all attendees will be taking Uber and lyft instead of walking from their hotels.

Keon Hardemon is such a racist shakedown artist. Wraps himself in black pride but just a nasty little con. County BCC member Auntie Jordan is a registered lobbyist for the Beckham group but young nephew Keon conveniently failed to mention that during the entire runup to the Mel Reese vote.
Now this..isn’t about cultural pride for the beach, the existing black beach historical foundation has flounder for years from lack of community support, nobody gives a rat’s ass about some Jim Crow beach and it’s not even in his district , no, this is about the project kickbacks he and his clan can troll for and his fellow commissioners are to blame for enabling his shit

This seems like a MUCH better spot for Ultra. Far from residents, no access to water, and much larger plot of land. There’s nothing really on that plot of land. Bayfront was way too cramped and the traffic downtown was bad to get into Ultra. There’s plenty of space for people to park at Miami Seaquarium and the Marine Stadium. The trees surrounding that plot of land would also help muffle the sound and keep most of it from extending to Downtown or Key Biscayne. It looks like an all around win to me to be honest.
