Universal Will Lobby For Virgin Trains Stop Near Their New Orlando Theme Park

Universal Orlando announced a plan to build a major new theme park – and they want A Virgin Trains station nearby with a link to Miami.

Universal’s Epic Universe will become the first major new theme park built in the U.S. since 2001, when Disney’s California Adventure was completed. It is also Universal’s biggest ever investment in the theme park business and in Florida, with employee count to increase by over 50%.

Tom Williams, CEO of Universal Parks and Resorts, said the company will lobby “with every bit of strength that we’ve got” for a Virgin Trains stop at the Orange County Convention Center, near the entrance to the new park.

Passengers from Miami will be able to ride to Orlando Airport in 2022 and also possibly Disney in the same year.

Virgin Trains president Patrick Goddard said in April that the company has an excellent relationship with Disney, and that the companies signed a letter of intent for a new station at Walt Disney World. The station has not been finalized yet though.

An extension to Tampa is also in the works.

I’m all for connectivity but the Orlando authorities should step up to the plate and create dedicated rail connections so that Virgin can focus on longer runs without stops.

Yea I totally agree. I thought this was meant to eventually be a statewide rail system connecting the major cities at their urban core and then from there these separate regional could develop any sort of mass transit system. Also does anyone know why the Orlando station is located at the airport and their downtown

SunRail hasn’t even been open for a decade and already stations have walkable TOD. The closest Tri-Rail has is… like Sheridan Street in Hollywood.

Sunrail is way ahead of things compared to TriRail.

Disney makes sense because of visitor numbers and plans for Tampa. Uni is too far. Sunrail extension makes a lot more sense for them. With Sea World and the main section of Idrive right next to the new property, it would be smart for them to get their best to connect it.That connection, the airport, and some advertising would easily double ridership.
