Video: How Contractors Are Building Foundation At 100-Story Waldorf Astoria Supertall

The Wall Street Journal has published an in-depth feature showing how contractors are building the foundation at the 100-story Waldorf Astoria supertall tower in Downtown Miami.

A technique called “deep soil mixing” is being used to make the onsite soil much stronger than normal. The process also seals out nearly all water.

The technique was previously mainly used in industrial projects such as oil refineries that needed extremely strong soil for heavy equipment.

Miami was the first city where the technique was used in non-industrial projects, a contractor for the Waldorf said in an interview. The technique has since spread around the globe, the report added.

The Waldorf Astoria Hotel & Residences will include 360 residential condo units and 205 hotel rooms.

A groundbreaking ceremony took place in November 2022.

I wish they added an observatory on top. Miami desperately needs one!

Someone will hopefully pick up the SkyRise and revive the project. That is what we desperately need.

I really hope this happens

I actually really like the SkyRise design but some people want the usual needle or radio tower look because that as what they are used to. I’m down with any design as long as they built something there.

Skyrise was an ugly design and it’s height would have blocked views of the Skyline.

Love the wavelike Skyrise ! Miami needs a landmark like this!

So are they soil mixing in addition to the piling work? I would think you still want to pile all the way to bedrock…

Now, the city needs to fix the fountain in bayside.

The City needs about half a million dollars a year to operate the Claude Pepper fountain in Bayfront Park that is why it’s not operating.

Then they can place a humongous modern piece of art there, I mean anything but that fugly thing that is there now

Is this also happening at One Southside Park? I’ve seen them churning the land, but it’s been sitting wet for some time… hope they speed it up!

Any news on OKAN?
By far, my favorite design.

Didn’t Turner do this at Brickel City Center 20 years ago? Why is it “groundbreaking” (pun) now?

Perhaps the cost of the additional effort has dropped low enough to make it more appealing to builders.

What other buildings are they doing this with. Will this technique prevent downtown from going underwater long term?

Headline starts with the word “video”. Why no video?

Interesting technique. I can’t wait to see the Waldorf completed. However, I’m worried how this might affect any wildlife that lives underground, as well as the water table.
